App is Fixed! And TTW Turns 7!

Hello TTW friends. We had a temporary issue with the app but it's all fixed now. If you experienced the trouble, we apologize for the frustration. All should be working properly now - just close and reopen the TTW to allow it to reset. Thanks for your patience and your prayers! And if you missed it - today's original blogpost is below...

Happy Anniversary TTW!
Seven years ago this week TTW launched a brand new app in the App Store (the official date was 12/29/11), and the road since that day has been quite an adventure! So I want to extend a very big thank you to all of you who have been part of this journey, and to all those who continue to make it possible. It is just amazing to look back and see how far we've come.

So I thought I would share a quick story. On Sunday I happened to visit a very large church that I had also visited back when we launched. I remember so clearly - looking around the 4,000 seat auditorium in 2012 and thinking, "We could reach enough people to fill this whole room." Now I didn't tell people that - because it was crazy! We were a bootstrap ministry with very big dreams and very little means. Well, seven years of faith, perseverance, and hard work gone by - and today we could fill that room about 26 times every week. Our daily audience just reached 15,000 - our seventh year of 50% audience increase year-over-year. And to God be every last bit of glory!

I can't say that I'm surprised to be here. I always knew that I couldn't do it - but God could. But I still stand in awe! This is crazy awesome. And I also can't say that I've stopped dreaming big. There are a lot more people who need a Bible habit. And just recently, some big doors started opening up. The opportunity to translate suddenly opened wide this year as YouVersion is working with us to translate our new "Start Here" plan for new believers into 60+ languages. How cool is that?!!

And there's so much more - I truly believe that we are standing at a moment of opportunity, much as we did seven years ago. So we'll keep at it as you keep praying for us. Thanks so much to all of you who do pray for us. We need it. And here's to the next seven!

Always in the unfailing love of Christ,
Pastor Kris

PS. Tomorrow (Jan 1) is the last day for our donation-match opportunity, and everyone who donates through Jan 1 gets a TTW Pop-Socket. Of course, give today (postmark or online Dec 31) for your last chance at 2018 tax deductions. As always, TTW is free with no strings, no ads, and no giving guilt trips attached. Last Week for Donation-Match & TTW PopSocket

Hello TTW Friends!
I hope that your Christmas was blessed, and I hope that the holiday rush finally slows down so you can focus on the stuff that matters most. For me, the week between Christmas and New Year's is a chance to finally take a breath and rest and enjoy some of life's simple blessings with my family. I hope you are able to do the same. Of course, life doesn't always make that easy. (That's why we designed an app to help busy people get some real time in the Word - because I'm one of them!).

So I'll make this quick. Just wanted to let you know that our Donation-Match event is still on through New Year's day, and every donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar until then. Plus we're still giving away TTW PopSockets to every donor in December. (If you got one and want another for your family - just email us! info@throughtheword.org, subject: PopSocket Request.

As always, TTW is free and we mean that - no strings, no ads, and no giving guilt trips attached. But it's important to know that we keep it free because people give to make that possible. So if you would like to invest in this mission, year-end is a great time. TTW is 100% listener supported, and this year we received the GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency (their highest honor). And so far this year, every $100 donated can be directly traced to 35,000 minutes of Bible engagement. So if you've been thinking about supporting our mission, this just happens to be a really good time! Just tap this link: mogiv.com/ttw - or find the donate button on our main menu anytime. Thanks!

Always in Christ,
Pastor Kris

Christmas Audio Update

Hello TTW. We have a special treat for you just in time for Christmas. The Shepherd of Bethlehem is a dramatic retelling of the Christmas story from the first-hand perspective of one of the shepherds keeping watch over his flock by night. Bill Welsh performs this original and powerful drama in two acts (about 30 minutes each). You can find the audio by tapping the Bible button and navigating your way to Luke 1 & Luke 2 (just tap the name of the Bible book to find your way around the Bible). Or you can use this direct link:
Act I: https://app.throughtheword.org/a/Luke/1
Act II: https://app.throughtheword.org/a/Luke/2

We hope you enjoy this audio drama. It's a little longer than our usual audio guides and a different style, but we think you'll love it. It's one of my own favorite Christmas traditions, and it perfect for your drive to Grandma's house or just sitting by the fire or whatever your tradition.

Merry Christmas to my TTW family!
- Pastor Kris  = )

Note: We had some technical trouble loading the drama as a reading plan for you - and we apologize if you experienced any difficulty with that. So instead of a reading plan, we're just providing the audio directly on the page for Luke 1 and Luke 2.

Shepherd of Bethlehem - Christmas Audio

Hello friends! Christmas is almost here, and we will have a special Christmas audio plan available beginning on Sunday. It’s an annual tradition here called the Shepherd of Bethlehem. This one’s a little different. It’s a dramatic retelling of the Christmas story, as told by one of the shepherds who was keeping watch by night. It’s a one man dramatic performance, written and performed by Pastor Bill Welsh (whom you may remember from our journey through Acts). The drama is in two parts, about 30 minutes each, and it’s one of my favorite Christmas traditions. You’ll find that available beginning Sunday on the Find Plans page. You'll also find it along with the guides on Luke 1 and 2. It’s great for family - perfect for your Christmas drive, or around the Christmas fire, or your own Christmas time with the Lord. I hope you enjoy it.
Bill Welsh tells the story of Christmas in this outstanding audio drama.

And second Christmas news - we mailed out all of the Through the Word PopSockets for anyone who donated up through Wednesday. Hoping you’ll get those by Christmas. The offer is still on through New Year’s: every donor gets a cool PopSocket phone grip with our Through the Word logo on it. But we won’t be mailing any more until after New Year. And as before, the donation match is still on - dollar-for-dollar match, also through New Year’s day.

That's all the news for today. On behalf of the TTW team - Merry Christmas!

 - Pastor Kris  = )

New: Start Here for New Believers

Hey TTW friends!
Pastor Kris here with some great news. We just launched a brand new 15-day plan called "Start Here | First Steps for New Believers." If you know anyone who is starting (or restarting) their walk with Jesus, or maybe just wants to check out the faith - this is the perfect plan to share with them. This one is only available on the YouVersion Bible App (not available on the TTW app yet), and it's as easy to share as a text message. Just send them the link below.

But even better than sending the link for them to follow on their own - you can follow the plan together. YouVersion has a special feature that allows you to follow a reading plan together with a friend, and share notes and thoughts together at the end of each day's reading. We included some simple questions to help you get a little discussion going. You can use it with a small group or new believer's class, or just follow it with a friend. It's the perfect tool to follow-up any time you share your faith with someone. And of course it's cost free and ad free - as always.

Get the Start Plan Here: https://www.bible.com/reading-plans/13502

And in even more exciting news, YouVersion is working now on translating the plan into more than 60 languages! This is crazy cool. We want this to be a simple and effective discipleship tool for missions and sharing faith in every part of the globe. (Try opening that link - then switch the language to Afrikaans - the first translation is already up!). We'll keep you posted as translations progress. For now, check out the English plan, consider who you might share it with, and please pray for us as we continue to reach the world - through the Word.

In Christ,
Pastor Kris

PS. If you're checking here to see if there's still time to get your TTW PopSocket and the donation match - the answer is yes. Now through January 1, every donor gets a TTW PopSocket by mail, and every donation gets matched dollar-for-dollar.  All donations that came in by Dec 16 should receive them by Christmas. For the rest, we'll do our best!

New Audio Guides in Titus!

Hey TTW! Pastor Kris here with my favorite kind of news: we have new audio guides!
The book of Titus is essential reading for every Christian in ministry - and anyone who desires to be found faithful with all that God has entrusted to them. I love this little book. So I invited one of my own mentors to sit down in the studio with me and walk through Titus one chapter at a time. You may remember Peyton Jones from the Leviticus guides. This time Peyton and I decided to cover the book together, and I hope you enjoy the results. The new reading plan is called "Entrusted" - and you can find it now by tapping the "Find Guides" button and scrolling down the Bible books to the book of Titus (towards the end).
Having a blast in the studio with Peyton Jones
I'm especially excited about this plan because it is the first in a series of new plans headed for release to you. There are a whole lot of details that go into running an app and a non-profit, and balancing may time is a never-ending challenge, but the audio guides are really the heart of our ministry. So I love getting back in the studio to record more. For me it's like I finally get to get back on the journey with all of you! So in the coming months, we're putting our focus back on recording new guides. We still gotta keep the lights on and the app running, but I'm in the studio this week working on Ephesians, and Peyton is finishing up a new plan through 1st John. So before I get back to that, I want to say thanks to all of you who give to make it possible for us to keep recording new guides and keep giving them away for free. Speaking of which...

Reminder: Our donation-match plan is continuing all this month. Every donation you make to TTW in December gets matched dollar-for-dollar by a fund from some generous donors.* So now's a great time to give - or sponsor a chapter! Plus every donor this month will get a TTW PopSocket to put on your phone. It's our way to say thanks - for believing in us!

Just click here to donate on our Mogiv Donate Page.

*Donation-match will continue through 1/1/19 or until $40,000 is raised, whichever happens first.

TTW T-Shirts Ready to Send!

Hey TTW! A quick update to let you know that the TTW T-shirts we ordered for September donors have finally arrived. We had a little delay with the printers, but they are here now and ready to ship! If you made a donation and submitted an order back in September, you should be receiving your T-shirt in the next week or so, depending on shipping time. If you missed the T-shirt promo, I am sorry to say that we can't take orders for T-shirts until the next time around. The next promo on the horizon is coming up just before Thanksgiving (this one isn't T-shirts, but we think you're gonna like it!).

Thanks for your patience on the shirts - this was our first time attempting a giveaway on this scale, and we hope they'll be worth the wait. And thanks for believing in what we do, and for helping us reach the world - through the Word!

In Christ,
Pastor Kris  = )

T-shirts are ready to ship!

AmazonSmile: 5% to TTW through Friday

Hey TTW friends,

Amazon Smile is running a promotion to help charities like TTW. Now through Friday (Nov 2), they're giving 5% of every purchase you make through smile.amazon.com to the charity of your choice. If you'd like to send that to TTW, simply go to smile.amazon.com, sign in to your Amazon account, and search for "Through the Word Inc" as your charity. Then shop away!

Important Notes!

  • Amazon only makes the contribution if you buy on smile.amazon.com - it does not work on the normal Amazon page - so you might want to bookmark the smile page.
  • The 5% promo lasts through Friday. After that it's the usual 0.5%.
  • This is not a good reason to do extra or unnecessary shopping. If you're buying something on Amazon anyway - it's a great opportunity. If not, please save your money!

App Update! Journal Fix & More.

Hello TTW Friends!
Pastor Kris here to let you know that we posted a new update to the TTW app in the App Store last weekend. TTW version 2.2.2 has a fix for an issue that affected the journaling feature ("Think" page) for some users. You can get the latest update in the App Stores here:

Solution for Ongoing App Issue: We have heard from a few users that they have had ongoing trouble with the app since we launched the NIV and CSB. It has been tough to solve because it affects only a few users, but we believe that we may have found a solution for you. The issue is tricky because it seems to be related to something that iCloud or Android save in your settings - even when you delete the app. That means that your phone saves the problem even when we change the app. That makes it really difficult to get rid of. But if that's you, we came up with the following directions for you to try. I'll work on making a better version of these directions with pictures for each step, but for now you can give this a try. Also please know that you can use the web version of the app at throughtheword.org until your app is working again, and always please email us at info@throughtheword.org with any issues and we'll do our best to help!
In Christ,
Pastor Kris

Here are the directions:

If you are having significant issues with the TTW app...

Fix for iPhone or iPad:

  1. Settings > Click Apple ID (your name at the top)
  2. iCloud > Turn off iCloud Drive,
  3. iCloud > Turn off iCloud Backup
  4. iTunes & App Store > Turn off Apps
  5. iTunes & App Store > Turn off Updates
  6. Uninstall TTW
  7. Reinstall TTW
  8. Check that TTW works.
  9. Turn iCloud Drive and iCloud Backup on and Turn on Apps and Updates

Fix for Android - try these solutions in order:

1st Solution:
Quit the TTW app completely (not just press home and go back to it).
  1. Press the app drawer button (usually the right button).
  2. Tap the ‘X’ or Swipe right to quit TTW.
  3. Press the home button and then go to reopen TTW.
2nd Solution:
Clear TTW’s App Cache and App Data
  1. Clear the app’s data: Go to Settings, Tap “Apps” > Tap “TTW” > Tap “Storage” > Tap “Clear cache” and Tap “Clear data”
  2. Go back to TTW App and Login.
3rd Solution:
Uninstall and Reinstall the app.

Praying for Friends in Hurricanes!

Hello TTW Friends,
Pastor Kris here with a quick note to send our love and compassion to all our friends hit by the recent hurricanes. One of the side-effects of having a ministry that reaches people in all parts of the world is that disaster relief has become much more personal to me. When we see natural disasters on the news, I think it's a fairly common response to think quickly through your friends and family and wonder, "Do I know anyone there?" I know I do it. That's human. But recently an additional thought has crept into my response. "I wonder if any of our TTW listeners were hit?" I realize that we have friends all over the world now, and I can't help but care what happens to them, and pray that God would send His people to help. It's not always easy to care, but it's been good for my heart.

Hurricane relief in particular has been very personal to me for some time. In 2005 we were part of a relief team to Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina hit. That relief work turned into a church plant, and my family moved there for five years to help. (In fact, TTW was born in Mississippi, and you'll still hear it on our original recordings). While we were in hurricane country, we witnessed firsthand the amazing work that God does through relief work, and the outpouring of love and compassion that came from God's people all over the country was just amazing. So as we pray for our friends hit by Hurricanes Michael, Florence and more, we pray with confidence, knowing that God can and will use even this for His purpose, and He will work it all for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purposes.  Our prayers are with you.

At the same time, we know that the God's help so often comes in the form of God's people showing up to make a difference. Teams of relief workers are there now, and they need more. And they need financial support! Following are links to organizations that we support and that we saw do amazing work after Katrina years ago, and who continue to respond effectively to disasters around the world. We encourage and endorse your support for them - and they provide amazing opportunities to volunteer. If ever you see news of disaster and question what God is doing - I would strongly encourage you to volunteer and show up before you answer that question. You may be amazed at what you see when God's people show up and bring compassion and real help. For those of you hit personally, we love you and we pray for you, and we trust that God is sending help!

Update! New fix for app issue!

Hello again friends. We have an update, and hopefully a fix for your app issues. We're so sorry for the recent frustration, but we have a fix in place and we need your help to test it out and let us know if it's working. For many of you, the app should be working fine. If your app is not working properly, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the app for the fix to kick in. So please try the following and let us know if it's working:

Try #1: Close & Reopen the App: That may be enough to get it working again.

Try #2: Delete & Reinstall the App: Even if you tried this before today, please try again. Here's a step by step:
 - Open your phone to the home screen where you see the TTW app.
 - Hold your finger on the TTW app icon until an X appears in the corner. Tap X to delete/uninstall.
 - Open the App Store and find "Through the Word"
 - Tap "Get" or "Install"

Test it & Let Us Know: After you reinstall, give the app a try and let us know if it worked. Contact us at info@throughtheword.org to tell us.

If it's still not working: Please email to let us know exactly what isn't working and what kind of device you are using. We will continue to work on a fix until it's working for everyone. In the meantime, you can use the web-app at throughtheword.org on your mobile or laptop.

Thanks so much for your patience and help!
In Christ, Pastor Kris

PS. If you're wondering what the problem was (and you like technical jargon) - we just switched the app to a new Bible API on Friday so that we can add more Bible translations on the same API. There was a query limit on the new API, and we didn't see it. So the app worked great in testing, but when we launched we passed the limit quickly and it shut down our access to the Bible server. Always another adventure.

Problems with the App Update?

Hello TTW friends!
We've had some reports of issues with the new app update on some devices. If you're having troubles, first I want to apologize for any frustration you've experienced. So sorry. We're working on a solution now and hope to have that out soon. Strangely, the issues did not appear in the test version, but popped up soon after release - but only on some devices. While we work on a fix, we want to make sure that you can continue your daily Bible habit. If you're not having issues, then you're all set! If you are having issues, here are a few options:

1. Use the web-app: open throughtheword.org on your mobile or laptop, login to your account, and you can access all the features of the regular app. Any time you have trouble on the app, the web-app is there for backup!

2. Try deleting and reinstalling the TTW app: This worked for some users experiencing issues. Just delete the old app (hold your finger on the TTW app until you see an X, then tap the X), then go to the App Store, search Through the Word, and tap Get to reinstall. You'll have to log in again, and all your saved data will be there.

3. Get the TTW app on another device: If you have a tablet or other phone you can use, try TTW on that one. You can login to the same account you normally use if you use the same email and password.

So those are your options. We will continue to work as quickly as we can to get a fix and solution into the App Store, and I will make an announcement here in TTW News. Thanks so much for you patience with us. See you in the Word!

In Christ,
Pastor Kris

App Update!! NIV, CSB & Bug Fixes!

Hello TTW friends!
Pastor Kris here. I can't even tell you how excited I am to make this announcement. Big news. Really big. Like super big!!

Okay, maybe that's overstating. But it's big. I know, you're saying "Just get to the news already!" Alright, alright. Maybe I just wanted to give you a little build up because I've literally been looking forward to this announcement for six years. And at long last, here it is...
TTW just added the NIV and CSB translations!
We finally have options! And even better, the new translations both come with high quality audio Bibles. Can you tell I'm excited?

Along with the new Bible translations, you should also see several performance improvements and bug fixes for issues that recently cropped up on some devices. So...

To get the updates:
1. Open the App Store on your device.
Apple App Store Link
Google Play Store Link
2. Tap update!

That's the big news. If you're wondering why it took so long, it's an even longer story - about copyrights, licensing, software APIs, and all the crazy stuff that goes into running a Bible app. But we made it! And there's more to come. We'll be adding more translations and more improvements on the app - but one step at a time. So go get the update, and let us know what you think. And if you like TTW, please post a review in the App Store - those mean a lot to us!

In Christ,
Pastor Kris

P.S. (a few notes):

  • Issues on the new app? If you have issues, email info@throughtheword.org and we'll do all we can to fix it.
  • What happened to the ESV? To add the new translations, we had to temporarily remove the ESV - but it's coming back. Long story short - when we added the NIV & CSB, we had to change our API (now provided by DBL), and our ESV license is still in process for updating. And lots of other TLA's (three-letter-acronyms) were involved. If that sounded like nonsense to you, just be glad you don't have to deal with it every day!
  • Will TTW be adding KJV, NLT, or others? We plan to add a few more translations as we are able to get the licensing for them. It's a lot more work than you would think.
  • What's the NIV? The New International Version of the Bible is an outstanding translation in clear and understandable English, published by Biblica. It is the translation that I read from most often in my audio guides (along with the ESV).  Link to Biblica's Summary of the NIV
  • What's the CSB? The Christian Standard Bible is an accurate and balanced translation published by LifeWay, and is recently becoming a new favorite of mine to read. LifeWay link on the CSB
  • I heard there was some controversy about the NIV. Yes, there was some controversy in 2011 when the NIV updated their translation so that references to "men" or "brothers" were more clearly made to "people" or "brothers and sisters." The CSB and others have made similar updates. While I understand both sides of this debate, I support the updates as accurate to the original intent and meaning of the Bible text. The update was about changes to English language today, not changes to the original Bible (in the past, the English word "man" often meant human or mankind, where today it is more commonly used to refer to a male human). Here are a couple links to helpful comments on the matter: Christianity Today Article on Gender Inclusivity, and here's a Snopes article on verses "not in" the NIV.

App Update & Fix On the Way

Hello TTW Friends!
Over the last week we've had a multiple reports of issues on the app. We're working quickly to determine the cause, which we believe may be related to recent updates to both iOS and Android operating system software. We hope to get fixes to all of you ASAP, so please watch the App Store for updates. In the mean time, there are a couple things you can try.

1. Try deleting the app from your device, and reloading from the App Store. This has worked for most of our users reporting issues. You'll have to log in again, but your journals and progress will be saved.

2. If you can't get the app to work, you open throughtheword.org on your mobile or laptop, and login to your account there.

Hopefully that will solve your problems for now, and we'll launch the fix as soon as it's ready. The update will also have new Bible translations, including the NIV and CSB, with improved Bible audio.  Please pray for us as we continue to make improvements and fixes on the app.  Thanks!

In Christ,
Pastor Kris

Hurricane Prayers for Philippines & Carolinas

Hello TTW friends,
With a big hurricane and an even bigger typhoon making landfall today, we're praying for our neighbors on this planet and inviting you to join us. Hurricane Florence landed in the Carolinas today,  and Typhoon Mangkhut (four times stronger and much bigger) is nearing landfall in the Philippines. The the news coverage here in the US focuses on what's going on locally of course, but we've got lots of TTW family in both the US east coast and the Philippines, and we want to do what we can to help and to pray for both situations. Hurricane relief is close to my heart personally, as I got to see first hand the amazing work that God can do after a storm in South Mississippi after Katrina in 2005. So we're praying for the victims, for the relief workers, and for God's work through it all. We put our trust in Him along with you. Thanks for joining us in prayer!

In Christ,
Pastor Kris

PS If you're interested in donating to relief efforts in either location, there are a lot of outstanding charities. Our years in Mississippi after Katrina gave me great respect for a one organization in particular. Samaritan's Purse does outstanding relief work worldwide, and brings grace and the gospel along with real tangible help and rescue. Although I have had minor disagreements with a few political statements made by Franklin Graham in the past, the relief work is quite phenomenal. New TTW 90-second Videos!

Hello TTW!
Pastor Kris here, and very excited to announce our all new video reading plan called "The Bible Explained in 90-seconds | Genesis 1-11."  It just went live today on the YouVersion Bible App!

Okay, so it's not the entire Bible in 90 seconds. I can't talk that fast. But we do cover each chapter from Genesis 1 to 11 in 90 seconds each. I had a blast making these, and I think you'll really enjoy the all the fun animations that bring each chapter to life. To get the reading plan, just follow this link:
Enjoy! And let us know what you think. And if you like 'em, let someone else know what you think!

 - Pastor Kris  =)

PS. Big thanks to Dan Torres for his video production work on these - really awesome work. If you'd like to share these, you can use any of these direct links to our YouTube page:

Now Share a Direct Link to TTW Audio!

Hey TTW! Andrea here with big news. Now you can share a direct link to TTW audio! Have you ever heard an awesome study through Leviticus you think your best friend Barbara would love to hear? Or maybe an encouragement in Numbers for your Great Uncle Phillip? Great News! Now,  when you tap on the "Copy + Share" button under the "Connect" tab, you'll get a direct link to the specific chapter guide you are studying on TTW! Your friend won't need to download the app or anything. All they have to do is click the link you shared and they'll open the new TTW website directly to that chapter. We're still working on improvements, but this is a big step. Soon we will be adding an image to the "Copy/Share" option to really spice it up:) We encourage you not only to share studies, but to add your own personal note with it as you share. Remember- Sharing is caring!

App Update! Get the iPad Fix & More!

Hello TTW friends!
I've got news - we just launched an update to our mobile app, so go get it! There are a few minor fixes, and most importantly a big fix for anyone using an older device - especially old iPads. Some of the latest features were causing issues on older devices, so we made an update that should work for everyone. We've also added a few feature upgrades for new devices, so please get the update asap!

How to Get the App Update: Just open the App Store on your device, search for Through the Word, and hit update. Easy peasy.

That's it. Go get it! I added a little more info below for those of you looking for details, but the main thing is simple: go get the update!

See you on the journey,
 - Pastor Kris = ]

In the studio recently for the Manhood Talks

What's Coming Next: The next big update is still a few weeks away, and will include new translations and better audio Bibles. It took us a few years and a surprising amount of work, but we finally got the licenses to add the NIV and CSB versions. We hope to launch those in a few weeks. We're so excited!

Why Older iPads Weren't Working: We are sorry for any frustrations caused by the iPad issue. Basically, older devices cannot load the newest version of iOS, which is the operating system. Sometimes new features don't work right on the old operating system, and it causes basic features to break down. You'll see the same thing on lots of apps (the Starbucks app shuts down on our old iPhone).  So it a balancing act for programmers to keep the app updated so that it has new features and works on the latest operating system - but also doesn't break down on old devices. However, it can be done, and we want everyone to be able to use TTW.

What to do if your TTW app doesn't work: Anytime you have trouble with any app, it always helps to make sure you have the latest version of the app, and also the latest version of iOS or Android. If you still have trouble with the TTW app, contact us at info@throughtheword.org and let us know about it. We want to help!

New: Check out the b-side audio!

Hey TTW! Pastor Kris here. We just added something brand new that I've been wanting to do for a very long time: the b-side audio guide!

If you're over 30, you probably remember b-side songs from vinyl and cassette singles. Basically it's the bonus content. Every time I record an audio guide for TTW, there is so much more that I want to share - but we respect your time, and we want to help you keep that daily habit in the midst of your busy schedule. So we keep it short. Still, I know that some of you wouldn't mind a few more minutes to dig deeper in the chapter together. So for a very long time, I have dreamed of recording a few extra minutes of content that I had to trim - and put it on the b-side. But there was just no where to put it on the old app. But now at long last, the new TTW app has made it possible - and the b-sides are finally here!

Now I'm only just getting started on these. If I had better foresight, I would have been recording these all along. But I didn't. There's an old saying: The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago, the second best time is today. So we recorded the first few b-side audio guides at the end of Proverbs, and you can find those now. More will be added as we move forward. I'll be recording more with Genesis 36-50 (finally recording Joseph's epic story!), and we'll keep doing more as we continue to record guides for more books. At long last I'll be able to dig a little deeper on those verses and topics that we had to skip or rush through in the past! (Can you tell I'm excited about this? I don't think you know how hard it is for a long-message teacher like me to get every chapter down to 9 minutes!).

Of course the b-side is just optional - if you've got a little extra time and interest. If not, you won't even see it. To find it, just tap on the little down arrow (triangle) next to the audio title to bring up more available audio, then tap on the b-side. Like I said - only the end of Proverbs is available now.

Hope you like the bonus material. I'll see you back on the journey!

PrimeDay: Good & Bad Reasons to Shop

Hello TTW Friends!
Today is Prime Day, which means that Amazon is posting lots of deals to encourage us all to buy more stuff! And if you shop through Amazon Smile, you can support Through the Word and lots of other great charities. That's pretty awesome - but it should also be balanced with a little perspective. First of all, please don't buy more stuff just to get that donation going. That's a bad reason to shop. In all things, we should always be wise stewards with the money that God has entrusted to us. Shopping is not inherently good or bad of course, and neither is money. They are part of life. But we are called to handle our money, and our shopping, with wisdom. So here are some good and bad reasons to shop today:

Good Reason to Shop: "I need a new watch - my old one broke. It's on a great sale, the reviews are solid, and if I open to smile.amazon.com and enter Through the Word Inc as my charity, they get half a percent. I'm buying it anyway, so why not help TTW?"

Bad Reason to Shop: "I don't need another gorilla costume for my toy poodle, he already has seven. But hey, if I buy today, it helps TTW!"

Reality Check: TTW gets half a percent of your purchase price if you designate us. That means a $100 purchase gives us 50 cents. It's a nice little bonus, and it adds up eventually, but it is by no means a reason to do any unnecessary shopping.

So please be wise with your money and your shopping. If you're already shopping on Amazon, just remember to open to smile.amazon.com and designate Through the Word as  your charity before you buy (it only works if you open that page every time!). If you don't need to do any shopping, good for you! I have to admit I was a little hesitant about signing TTW up on Amazon Smile, because I don't want our dear listeners to get coerced into any unnecessary purchases. But of course, you can make your own decisions. So be wise, shop smart, and store your real treasures in Heaven! "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

In Christ,

My Kids on Mission! (Prayer request from Pastor Kris)

Hello TTW! Pastor Kris here, and I would like to introduce you to my kids. I have three amazing children, thanks to God, and thanks to my incredibly amazing wife, Andrea. Two of our kids are spending most of the summer on the other side of the world from us, serving God on two different mission fields. I'm so excited. We've been taking our kids with us on mission since they were infants - but it's a whole new thing to send them off to the opposite end of the planet for several weeks apart from us. So for those of you who know us, I sure would appreciate your prayers!

Here's a quick intro to each of my kids and the missions they're up to this summer:

This is Daisy. The very first kid I ever had. She's not really a kid any more, as she's almost 21, but she has an amazing heart for kids, and she just pours out God's love on them in children's ministry week after week, serving at multiple churches. She's also a musician and pretty much all around amazing. Right now she's in Romania, serving at a camp for orphans this summer. She's been part of this mission trip since she was two, and she's gone the last three years without he family, joining the team from Refuge. She's awesome.
Daisy loves coffee almost as much as her mom.
Oh, and the other guy in the photos is her boyfriend Noah. He's pretty great too. He's part of the TTW team, and he and his family are also on the Romania mission with Daisy. Please pray for the team and for the many kids they have brought to camp.
We were all in Budapest together before missions started.

This is Kaleb. My one and only son. He'll be a senior in high school this fall, and he's spending the whole summer with a team in Budapest as part of a program called "A Vision for Life."  It's basically like a bunch of missions all strung together, plus lots of Bible study, team building, and time to seek God for His plan for your life. So awesome. Please pray for Kaleb and the whole team!

Kaleb worked for months to save up for his trip.
Joining me in the studio for a series called Manhood Talks.
This is Shiloh. The very last kid I ever had. All my kids are funny, but Shiloh may well be the silliest of the bunch. She's got an amazing wit, and even more amazing smile, and she's pretty much the best baby sitter in town. After the five of us went out to Europe to drop off the teams for missions, we came back with just Shiloh - so she gets to play only child for the summer. Thanks for praying for my family. I love my kids!

This was on the road to Corinth - following the footsteps of Paul.
This kid cracks me up.

Here's a few more pics from our trip to drop them off for mission.  I had a conference in Athens with Bible societies and Bible app ministries from around the world - it was called the Digital Bible Library Summit. Amazing people and amazing work God is doing!  Thanks again for praying!

The view from the top of the Acropolis. So awesome.
Gyros in Greece. Hello delicious.
Gotta thank Ryanair for making travel in Europe so amazingly cheap!

Thanks to the Hellenic Bible Society in Athens for hosting us!
